U4: Express Rec U4s participate in two “camp-style” sessions per week which include skill-developing games and mini scrimmages.  Express Rec U4s do not play formal games.

U5-U13: In the Fall season, Express Rec U5-U13s attend two training sessions each week – one session is led by a member of the HESC coaching staff and one session is led by the team’s Team Manager or Assistant Team Manager, following curriculum provided by HESC.  Fall season games are played either Friday evenings or Saturday mornings.

U5-U13: In the Spring season, Express Rec U5-U13s attend one training session each week led by a member of the HESC coaching staff.  Spring Season games are generally played on Friday evenings for the U9-U13 age groups, Saturday mornings for the U4 – U8  age groups.

All U5-U13 Express Rec teams will have one game replaced with a Friday night futsal event or “Futsal Friday,” which will be held on HESC’s futsal complex at South Campus.

What is Futsal? Futsal is a 5 v 5 game played on a small field with a hard surface with a ball that is designed to reduce bouncing. Futsal is a great skill developer, demanding quick reflexes, fast thinking and pin point passing. Futsal helps with player development by demanding precise ball control and technical skill, agility, lightening reflexes and quick decision making. As the balls have less bounce they tend to stay in play longer and promote close ball control and an improved speed of play.    No score is recorded for futsal for any age groups.

For Futsal events, players must wear flat soled shoes – no cleats or turf shoes – basic sneakers work well.

Express Rec cannot succeed without parent volunteers.  No prior soccer experience is necessary, just a love for kids and willingness to volunteer 2-3 hours per week to help them have a fabulous experience.  There are 2 primary ways to volunteer:

Team Managers: Serve as the primary hub of communication between Express Rec leadership and team parents.  With the help of an Assistant Team Manager and based on detailed instructions and curriculum from the Express Rec coaching staff, Team Managers run one training session per week (no prior experience necessary) and run their team’s weekly game.  As a Team Manager you are a key conduit of information between the club, your coach and your team. You will be responsible for passing out uniforms, keeping the team organized and running smoothly by communicating practice and game schedules. Team bonding is also an important part of soccer, so we encourage setting up some fun team events, like a kickoff ice cream social or a year end pizza party.

Assistant Team Managers: Support the Team Manager in fulfilling the role of Team Manager.

Express Rec Team Managers are asked to take U.S. Soccer’s 2-hour National “F” License course online prior to the start of the season. The cost is $25 and provides Team Managers with age appropriate coaching concepts and important first aid information.
